Bear Watching in Delaware County, Pennsylvania

If you live in Delaware County, don’t leave food out or walk around at night!

According to CBS 3 Philly, a big black bear was spotted and captured by a camera wandering around nearby residential areas. The bear was first seen around Bridge Street and Dennison Avenue, which is near Drexel Hill. According to a local, the area is not heavily forested, so it was a surprise to see one appear so close to people’s homes.

When it was learned that a bear had been sighted, nearby schools were locked down and police in Upper Darby, Clifton Heights and Lansdowne warned people to stay in homes.

Wildlife officials managed to shoot the bear with a tranquilizer, but despite their efforts to restrain it, the elusive bear got away.

Hours were spent trying to entice the bear with various foods and sweets, but no dice. I probably thought it was too easy! They also searched on foot, but to no avail – lots of thick brush made it difficult.

Now they hope the bear will be secured in a safe donut trap that will stay overnight. If the bear is captured by the Game Commission, then it will be moved along the Blue Mountains range.

In the meantime, if you live in the area, it is better not to let your children play outside without supervision and make sure that your pets cannot roam. And don’t leave food out overnight!
