The team locked up Deatrick Nichols for the 2023 season, extending him for one more year. Nichols, who was a rookie last season, is already under contract for the 2022 season.

The University of South Florida alum has started 12 games in the 2021 regular season, missing the final two before appearing in the Western Finals and the 108th Gray Cup win over the Tigers- Hamilton Cats as the Blue Bombers repeated as champions.

The 27-year-old Miami native has been a big part of the year for the Bombers, recording 43 defensive tackles and three more on special teams. He also had three interceptions, dropped a quarterback behind the line of scrimmage and added a recovered fumble to his resume. He was also among the league leaders with seven missed pass attempts.

In the Gray Cup, he had four tackles and saw the game-winning interception in overtime slip away before falling to Winston Rose, who resurfaced with the club earlier this month.

Nichols was named West Division All-Star and CFL All-Star for 2021.

Nichols first signed with the Bombers on Feb. 5, 2021, after playing in the XFL and NFL in 2020.
