Taylor-Johnson didn’t return to the franchise, at least in part because of her work issues with James – who wielded as much creative control as she could, even bringing in her husband, Niall Leonardto write the script for the sequels, fifty shades darker and fifty shades lighter.

“We would have good barneys on set,” Taylor-Johnson recalled to Carry magazine in 2015. “I’m not confrontational, but it was about finding a way between the two of us, to satisfy her vision of what she had written as well as my need to visualize this person on screen.”

She also said The Hollywood Reporter in 2015 that James “would also be the first to say it wasn’t easy. It wasn’t easy. But we made it. I think we both felt it was an incredibly painful process. ” James said during an appearance on MSNBC that “people are going to be banging their heads, and that’s exactly what happened.”

open up to the Sunday time magazine in 2017, Taylor-Johnson said she doesn’t regret making the film, per se, “because it would just finish me off. Looking back, would I do it again? Of course I wouldn’t. I’d be crazy.”

She continued, “I love everyone, and I get really confused when they don’t like me. I was so confused by EL James. I don’t understand when I can’t lead a person, when he doesn’t. there is no synergy.”
