MULVANE — The Great Bend Bat Cats hit a pair of shutouts with 23 strikeouts to outstrip the Mulvane Patriots 8-0, 11-0 in Sunday’s Sunflower Collegiate League baseball doubleheader.
The Bat Cats (10-1, 6-0) are in first place in the Sunflower Collegiate League. Great Bend takes on 316 Elite in Tuesday’s 6 p.m. double draft at Al Burns Memorial Field.
BAT CATS 8, MULVANE 0 (G1) – Bat Cats pitcher Dash Albus (2-0) struck out seven and reliever George Austin struck out four in two innings in a 2-hit shutout sure.
The formidable Simon Larranaga of Temple College (Texas) kept rolling with a pair of 2-run hits to spark the Bats Cats past Mulvane 8-0.
Alex Rodgers doubled and scored on a first-inning groundout from Kyle Gates for a 1-0 lead. Larranaga had a 2-run brace to score Rodgers and Gates after back-to-back singles in the third set. Larranaga scored on a sacrifice fly from Adam Mustow.
Gates followed suit with a 2-run single to score Brady Kreutzer and Matthew Howell after a single and a walk on the fourth inning. Larranaga capped off another great night with a 2-run hit in the seventh inning.
The Bat Cats line of Rodgers, Gates and Larranaga dominated with 6 for 11 at bats with seven RBIs and six runs scored.
BAT CATS 11, MULVANE 0 (G2) – Starter David Stuart (2-0) struck out 10 batters and Cade McWilliams whipped up two batters in a 4-hit shutout to sweep the doubleheader.
Colby Christian of Temple College (Texas) drilled a pair of 2-run homers.
Rodgers scored a single, stole two bases and scored on a first inning error. Christian’s 2-run homer in the fourth inning brought Larranaga home. Larranaga passed Hunter Gotreaux at home and Christian followed with a 2-run homer in the fifth inning.
Gotreaux doubled Brady Kreutzer and Gotreaux scored on a Bodi Wallar pitch. Conner Allen and Larranaga scored on errors and Rodgers scored on a passed fly in the 5-run sixth inning.
