Shopify Adds NFT-Gated Option for Online Retailers

Shopify is looking at NFTs as the future of e-commerce.

The e-commerce giant, which enables small businesses to create personalized e-commerce stores, launches NFT-closed storefronts as a new feature for brands looking to make their stores more exclusive, Shopify announced on Wednesday.

“Invite your community into a world that recognizes and rewards loyalty,” says a narrator in Shopify’s announcement video, which features a skateboarder who walks through a pastel gate and transforms into a NFT doodles.

“Token holders connect a crypto wallet to unlock exclusive shopping experiences, from early access to drops and limited collections to unique experiences and other surprises,” the video explains.

Shopify GM shop (merch closed, and a pun on the Crypto Twitter acronym for “Hello”) is currently in beta, and only those with existing NFT collections are eligible to request early access.

Those who have not yet been approved can still add a NFT Token Lock App like Shopthru or Single to their Shopify storefronts, though.

As part of its token-enclosed store launch, Shopify revealed that it is already in partnership with Adam Bomb Squad, Doodles, women’s worldInvisible Friends, Superplastic, Stapleverseand cool cats NFT collections to create token-secure storefronts.

In addition to online token management, Shopify is adding “IRL” token management in physical stores, which means that only eligible NFT holders can purchase certain products at that physical location.

Why is this important? On the one hand, this means that the future of Web3 shopping is synonymous with exclusivity. And while NFTs are often oversimplified as digital art, or “jpg”, these unique blockchain tokens that signify ownership of an asset are increasingly being used as pass, tickets for eventsand “keys” that unlock perks.

And it’s not Shopify first foray into NFT: The company has been into Web3 for a while now, as it announced the rollout of NFT Sales through its platform last year. On Shopify, brands can mint and sell NFTs to customers on Ethereum, PolygonSolana or To flow.
